How to transfer files from your old iPhone to your new iPhone

Although buying a new iPhone is an excited experience in life, learning how to transfer files from your old iPhone to your new iPhone can be time consuming that we all face at some point, in fact, all our most valuable files such as, pictures, videos, apps, messages, notes, and contacts are stored in our old iPhone, so when the new iPhone arrives, we need to figure out how to transfer all these files from the old iPhone to the new one, as easy as possible.

Fortunately, for this process, I’m bringing this step-by-step guide, that will show you how to transfer files from your old iPhone to your new iPhone in an easy manner.

1. Trasfer your files using iCloud

The first way to transfer your files from your old iPhone to your new iPhone is using the iCloud app, which comes pre-installed in newer iPhone models and it only works with iOS 5 or later requiring an iCloud account.

The first step is backing up all the old iPhone’s files, and then transfer them to the new iPhone. Depending on the size of your files, using this process takes longer, for that, it is highly recommended to connect your device to WI-Fi for faster and more reliable transfer. so let’s start.

Grab your old iPhone and from its home-screen, click setting.
Scroll down and click iCloud.
Scroll down and click Storage & Backup
and finally, click Back up Now, the process will begin and will take a while, depending on your file size and Wi-Fi speed.

Note: I’m transferring these files using an iPhone 6 with iOS 8, and the following steps are performed when you turn-on your new iPhone for the first time.

When your finish to backup all your files from your old iPhone, turn on your new iPhone, go throug all the following steps:

Turn on your new iPhone and swipe the welcome screen to get started
Choose language and country
Connect your device to Wi-Fi or Cellular connection
Choose Restore from iCloud Backup, and tap next.
Sign in to your iCloud account. Note: you must use the same iCloud account for both iPhones to transfer your files.
Accept terms and conditions, and tap next
Select the latest backup of your older iPhone, and Restore.
enter your Apple ID and password, and tap next.
The file transfer process will begin and how long will take to finish will depend on size of files and Wi-Fi speed.

If you’ve already set up your new iPhone without restoring your files from iCloud, you can start the OS setup assistant again to restore files from backup by following these steps:

From your new iPhone’s home-screen tap settings
Scroll down and tap General
Scroll down to the end and tap reset
Now, tap Erase All Content and Setting
Enter pass-code, and the setup process will start again, so you can follow the outlined steps from the images above.

2. Transfer all files to your new iPhone Using iTunes

The fastest and most reliable option to backup and transfers your files from your old iPhone to your new iPhone is using iTunes, as it’s compatible with all iOS version and iPhone models.

Before backing up your files from your old device make sure you have installed the latest iTunes version on your computer, if not, you can download the latest version from here: Download iTunes

So lets start:

Grab your old iPhone and connect it to your computer through USB port. iTunes will open automatically, if not open iTunes manually.
From the iTunes’ screen, go to the upper left corner and click File.
Next, click Devices
And, finally, click Back Up. The process will begin and it will take a while.

Restore your files to new iPhone with iTunes

When backup is done, you can transfer your files to your new iPhone in two different ways: When you turn on your iPhone for the first time, follow all the steps below to transfers files:

Turn on your new iPhone and swipe the welcome screen to get started
Choose language and country
Connect your device to Wi-Fi or Cellular connection
Choose Restore from iTunes Backup, and tap next.
Connect your iPhone to  the same computer you used to backup your old iPhone’s files
iTunes will ask to set up iPhone as new device or restore from backup, choose restore from backup, and the transfer will start and it will take a while.

The second way to transfer files to your new device comes into play when you’ve already set up your new iPhone, in that case follow these steps:

Connect your new iPhone to the same computer you used to backup your old iPhone
iTunes will run automatically, if not run iTunes manually
From the iTunes’ screen, go to the upper left corner and click File
Next, click Devices
And, finally, click restore from Backup. The process will begin and it will take a while.

When the transfer finishes, your new iPhone will turn on, don’t disconnect it from iTunes, so it can sync other files that didn’t transfer such as music, videos, and apps.
